Here's what we did for

The Lab essentially serves as a great way for MTV’s producers and executives to keep their finger on the pulse of pop culture. Using a diverse band of students to get feedback on current and future projects, The Lab effectively parlays what’s on the mind of young people all across the United States directly to those at the masthead of MTV. The contributors to the blog come from various backgrounds and write about everything that interests them in a funny, socially conscious style, creating a kind of modern focus group in the process.

At Metalab, we handled everything from design to final implementation of the site. We also helped them get a handle on Wordpress as a means to publish their articles.

The Sound of Young America is a public radio show that highlights everything that’s awesome in the modern world. Hosted by Jesse Thorn, the broadcast (which is also available as a podcast) features in-depth discussions with a vast array of personalities from the entertainment and artistic worlds - and it’s all done with a humour and enthusiasm that is pretty rare when it comes to the stuffy world of radio. The show is currently broadcast all over America with distribution from Public Radio International, and has received great reviews by Time magazine and Salon.com.

At Metalab, we were responsible for a complete redesign of the site. It hasn’t gone live quite yet, but stay tuned!

While sites like YouTube are great for viewing dozens of random videos, it’s pretty rare that you come across a video that you actually wanted to see. SeenItYet finds the best videos on the web, as decided by the masses, and let’s you share your favorite videos privately with your own friends. Users submit their videos, which are then rated by the public and given a status based on their score. You can also share videos (along with your own commentary) with your friends, which provides a great filtration system for the millions of videos that turn up on the web.

SeenItYet is currently in private beta but will be launching soon.

AnswerMe is a service that harnesses Twitter to help answer the tough questions of the modern world, like “What cellphone should I buy?” or “Which Steinbeck book should I start with?”. While Twitter is a great service, the inanity of posts can get a bit trying at times - which is why it’s great to be able use it to make productivity a community effort. All you need to do is have a free Twitter account, and you’ll have the full breadth of the Twitter public helping you with your daily decisions (providing they aren’t too busy tweeting about their action packed walk to the mailbox).

We recently redesigned the upcoming site, which will be launching soon. Stay tuned!

To put it simply, Swatchblot is a great way of finding things that you want. However, such a simple summary doesn’t seem to do justice to the intricacy and pure fun of this service. Whether you’re trying to find what a celebrity wore to the Oscars or just trying to track down an accessory that you saw on your way to work, Swatchblot’s community can help you out - and all you need to do is upload a photo containing the item and then blot what you want to find. Hopefully, that will be enough for Swatchblot’s fashionphiles to tell you where you can pick it up. Swatchblot will be going live later this year.

280 Slides is a web app that allows you to create beautiful presentations right in your web browser. Aside from making simple, clean text based presentations using professional themes, you can add photos and movies (from sites like Flickr and YouTube) to create a fully customized and interactive slideshow. And when you’re done, you can easily download a copy of what you’ve done in the PowerPoint format; alternatively, if you want to keep your presentation in its birthplace, you can securely store it online and access it from anywhere in the world, or even embed it on your site. The app was recently featured on TechCrunch and The Unofficial Apple Weblog

Tumblize is a side project of ours where we design custom Tumblr themes for people who want to have a slicker, more personalized Tumblog. While Tumblr in itself is a great way to share pictures, videos and articles that you find on the web, we thought it would be fun to help people make the design of their page as thematically unique and intriguing as the content. As a result, Tumblize was born, and we’ve been hard at work ever since. We’re proud to say that Tumblize has been featured on some great sites, including Valleywag.

The site was built using the Basecamp API with a custom ruby on rails backend to manage orders as they come in. Check out the site to see a sample of the work we’ve done under the Tumblize moniker.

Mogulus is an internet broadcasting platform that has been making some serious waves in the tech community. They offer a unique broadcasting experience which allows users to broadcast live on their very own channel, while still having complete control over the content that goes on the air. Mogulus has recently received a great deal of buzz and has been profiled in publications including TechCrunch, Scobelizer, NewTeeVee, and Mashable.

We’ve been involved with Mogulus since early 2007, handling all website interface design (excluding their studio and player) and front-end development. We continue to work collaboratively and are working on some very exciting new features as we speak. Stay tuned.

Utilium is an educational tool that allows university faculty to quickly and easily create course materials for their students. Hosting a global collection of learning materials from reputable sources, Utilium allows educators to create engaging and concise courses, while subsequently freeing up time for essential activities like student interaction and research.

In addition to designing the application from the ground up, we were heavily involved in coordinating development as well as implementing our design with the Ruby on Rails app.

We just launched Utilium 2.0 with a new look and completely revised interface. It’s finally out of private beta so sign up and check it out!

A collection of recklessly hilarious, fast-paced, hard-hitting short films, Human Giant brings viewers innovative comedy with a distinctive style and direction. First seen online, short clips like “Shutterbugs” and “The Illusionators” have gained a huge cult following. Human Giant has also gained a large audience in the New York comedy scene through live shows at the underground club Upright Citizens Brigade. A second season was recently greenlit by MTV and the three-piece comedy team has since been hard at work for the past few months.

At MTV’s request, MetaLab developed a unique production blog to track the development of the second season. Using Tumblr, which is quickly becoming our platform of choice for simple blogs, cast members can easily post and manage content by themselves. The site also serves to promote their new DVD and an upcoming national tour.

Mark This Date is a great new way for people to share calendars. Users can share calendars denoting holidays, moon cycles, birthdays, and just about anything else you can attach a date to. We were brought in to create an overall look and feel for the application as well as provide branding and ongoing interface refinement.

We helped them out with a complete overhaul of their site, including a complete front-end reassessment and development. At the moment, we’re coordinating the implementation of our new design with their developers. Stay tuned.

An online resource for the more affluent consumer, Helium Report has been providing a comprehensive analysis of luxury services since 2005. Their staff works tirelessly to break through the hype and melodrama of upscale living, resulting in thorough, objective guides for the services their clients desire. Luxury yachts, hotels, private jets: it’s all there.

Metalab took over the contract from BusinessLogs (www.businesslogs.com) after designer, Mike Rundle, moved on to work on their startup 9rules full-time. We recently did a complete overhaul of their vacation landing pages, marketing materials and continue to work with them to refine their current appeal.

Discovery Coffee is one of our favorite places to work, and, more importantly, to drink copious amounts of espresso then stagger out in a caffeine addled haze. They roast beans from around the world on-site, and extend invitations to the public to view the entire process; miraculously, they maintain a laid back, unpretentious atmosphere. Working on the Discovery site was a refreshing change, as for once we didn’t have to slather it in glowing green “Sign Up Now” buttons.

At Metalab, we were responsible for the redesign and development of their company site.

We’re currently putting the finishing touches on the design. Stay tuned!
